Purhavre eller sandhavre kan gro alle steder, men kan gro i strukturskadet jord. En veletableret afgrøde kan gro meget hurtig og producere en stor biomasse og er dermed en god konkurrent. Er god til at opsamle kvælstof, men nedbrydning af plantemassen kræver også meget kvælstof og derfor går den godt i blanding med bælgplanter. Purhavre reducerer fritlevende nematoder.
